Travis Sauter Wins The Oktoberfest 100

By: Oktoberfest Race Weekend PR
(West Salem, WI – October 7, 2012) Travis Sauter capped off his 2012 season as he won the ASA Midwest Tour’s Oktoberfest 100 on the final day of the 43rd Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, WI.

Zach Riddle won the JMcK 63 while Matt Berger won the Late Model Challenge. Jerry Schneider won the Vintage Car main event while Phil Malouf won in the Bandits. Kyle Stark was the big winner in the Enduro.

Travis Sauter won another Oktoberfest 100 holding off Skylar Holzhausen for the win. Sauter got past Chris Wimmer for the lead on lap 55 and held off Holzhausen for the win. Dan Fredrickson was third with Griffin McGrath in fourth. Jonathan Eilen was fifth. Eilen also became the 2012 ASA Midwest Tour Champion along with Matt Tifft winning the Rookie of the Year.
It is the third time in the last four years in a row that a member of the Sauter family won the weekend’s main event.

J. Herbst was the early leader in segment one of the JMcK 63 event. Caution flew on lap three when Bobby Wilberg and Dan Jung got together in turn two. Over in turn four, Eddie May and Chris Marek tangled with May going off on the hook. On the re-start, Herbst continued to lead with Jon Reynolds Jr. in second. Skylar Holzhausen and Zach Riddle put on a great battle for third in the closing laps. At the finish, it was Herbst winning the segment with Reynolds in second. Holzhausen edged out Riddle for third while Jesse Bernhagen rounded out the top five.

Eleven cars were inverted for the second segment. Wilberg got the lead over Corey Jankowski at the start. It got wild on lap three when Marek spun coming off of turn four. He was in the middle of the track and collected Holzhausen, Herbst and Matt Berger. Herbst was able to drive to the pits while Holzhausen and Berger went off on the hook. Wilberg continued to lead on the re-start and would have an easy drive to win the second segment. Behind him Riddle worked his way up to finish second with John DeAngelis Jr. in third. Kyle Shear was fourth with Travis Stanley rounding out the top five.

Going into the final segment, Riddle had the lead with six points with Reynolds in second with nine points.

Shear took the lead at the drop of the green flag with Marek in second. Riddle made his way up to fifth by lap five. Riddle then worked his way up to fourth by pass DeAngelis on lap nine. Two laps later, he got around Wilberg for third, putting him in a secure spot to win the overall title. Bernhagen was running segment in the final segment with four laps to go, but Riddle easily passed him for the spot going into turn one. Shear’s lead was too big for Riddle to chase him down as the checkered flag flew. Bernhagen was third with Wilberg in fourth. Reynolds rounded out the top five in the final segment.

The Late Model Challenge made its debut at Oktoberfest where they compete in a two-segment race with 10 laps on the big track and 12 laps on the quarter-mile track.
Rob Myers led wire-to-wire in segment one to win the big track portion of the race. Dan Jung was second with Matt Berger in third.

The Late Models then took on the quarter-mile where Andy Niles had the early lead until Mike Beyer got around him coming off of turn two on lap five. Berger then got around into the second spot. Beyer would take the win with Berger in second.

Berger’s two-second place finishes made him the overall winner of the Late Model Challenge.

The Vintage Cars had a wild finish to their 15-lap feature event. John Gilbertson had the lead as Greg Oliver flew the white flag in the air with Jerry Schneider in second. Gilbertson went into turn one and lost control of his car and spun to the infield. Schneider would go by and take the win.

Phil Malouf and Adam Hayden had a spirited battle for the lead over the last five laps of the Bandit feature. Hayden was leading with five laps to go when Malouf went to inside of Hayden. The two battled side-by-side until Malouf took over the top spot with three laps to go. Hayden gave it the old college try going into turn one on the last lap but would come up short allowing Malouf to win the event.

The 50-lap Enduro closed out the 43rd edition of Oktoberfest. Kyle Stark and Justin Schelitzche were the class of the field in the event as they lapped the field. Schelitzche would stay within a car length of Stark but that was as close as he would get as Stark would take the win.
