WEINKAUF AND KREYER TAKE QUALIFYING FEATURE WINS AT OKTOBERFEST
By: Kevin RamsellWEST SALEM, WI (Saturday, October 04, 2008) - The first day of the American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment Championship Weekend is in the books at the 39th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, WI. Jason Weinkauf and Frank Kreyer took home the wins.
Russ Blakeley and Andy Hanson led the field to the start of the Odd Qualifying feature. The two ran side-by-side until the caution flew on lap two for Jonathan Eilen's spin in turn one.
Blakeley led the field back to the green flag with Hanson right behind him. He jumped out to a big lead on lap five as Jason Weinkauf worked the inside of Hanson to take over the second spot. Three laps later, Weinkauf chased down Blakeley to challenge for the top spot. Morrissey was in third with fast qualifier Steve Carlson in fourth.
With ten laps completed, Carlson got on the inside of Morrissey to take over the third spot. Three laps later, Weinkauf got passed Blakeley for the lead.
Carlson continued to move to the front with ten laps to go as he got to the back bumper of Blakeley to challenge for the second spot. Two laps later, Carlson dug into the inside of Blakeley to take over the second spot. But, Weinkauf had a big lead.
Carlson would get within a car length of Weinkauf, but would come up a lap short as Weinkauf would take the win.
Dan Fredrickson secured a starting spot for the feature event by coming home third and Blakeley in fourth. Jason Schneider rounded out the top five.
In the second qualifier, it was Frank Kreyer and Nathan Haseleu on the front row. It was Kreyer taking the early lead with Cameron Datson moving into second.
The caution flew on lap seven when Kyle Calmes made something break in his suspension and made hard contact with the turn one wall. He was able to walk away, but the car was on the hook.
Kreyer to lead on the re-start and would get a car length over Datson running in second. Nathan Haseleu worked his way past Jeremy Lepak to take over the third spot on lap nine.
With ten laps to go, Kreyer had a comfortable lead over Datson. But the best battle was for the tenth spot as Tim Schendel caught the back bumper of Matt Kocourek. Schendel would get past Kocourek with seven laps to go and take over the spot.
At the checkers, it was Kreyer taking the win over Datson. Haseleu finished third with Lepak in fourth. Blake Horstman finished fifth.
Brett Moffitt and Nick Neville will also join the feature field as the next two to get in based on their qualifying time.
Earlier in the day, Steve Carlson shattered the track record in qualifying with a time of 18.723 seconds. The previous record was held by Steve Holzhausen who had a time of 19.133 seconds. In fact, the top-nine in qualifying were under the old record.
The action will get underway at Noon with last chance races, the 6-for-6 dash and the Oktoberfest 100 season finale for the ASAMT.
